A glimpse into the mind of one of our consultants
The day begins and suddenly I hear that familiar “pling”. I pause, the coffee cup hovering briefly before my lips, and I ask myself: “What was that again?” The chase begins – again! Was it Outlook? MS Teams? Or one of the two Citrix windows running silently in the background? Or was it MS Teams within a Citrix window? And what about Jira? Maybe a new ticket? Or Slack, which has a new comment?
The problem: most of these programs have the same notification sound! A single “pling”, but it could be coming from anywhere. Is that pling important? Is something burning? Or was it just a friendly reminder that someone had scheduled a meeting? The chaos is perfect.
And so the usual round begins: a mad dash through tabs, windows and virtual machines, all in a desperate search for the source of this universal “pling” that heralds the start of my working day.
As I jump from window to window, I stay focused – well, that’s how you stay focused with four team instances, Outlook and two Citrix sessions constantly in the way. I love the chaos. For me, multitasking is like juggling chainsaws for a circus performer – challenging but somehow exciting.
But the real secret is that I have learnt to stay flexible. If a customer reports an urgent problem in Citrix 1 and at the same time Citrix 2 spits out a critical error message, I switch between the two with charm. A bit like James Bond without the Aston Martin – but with a cup of coffee in my hand and countless virtual windows in front of me.
I love the fact that no two days are the same. Every message is a surprise, every project a new challenge. And let’s face it, who can claim to be active on multiple communication platforms at the same time, manoeuvring through different virtual work environments? It’s like a digital adventure, jumping between tasks and systems, always looking for the next solution.
At the end of the day, when all the tasks have been completed and the clients are happy, I sit back and think: ‘I have the best job in the world. Of course there are hectic moments, but juggling different projects keeps me on my toes and makes me feel like I’m making a difference – even from the distance.
And when my laptop shuts down, I hear that ‘pling’ again. But this time I just leave it in the room. It can wait until tomorrow.
