Explaining a Developers's job to a child
We asked our developer Kosti how he would explain to his child what a developer at alseda Consulting does. This is his answer, which we are happy to share with you:
When we want to develop a new car that is fast and appealing to as many people as possible, we must go through several steps: designing the exterior and interior, thinking about how the car’s components and assemblies should look, function and interact, and finally testing to make sure everything works as originally planned.
Another example is when a finished car is rebuilt by a team of specialists, implementing their own innovations based on years of experience in design and mechanics, and the result is an exclusive variant of the car.
An example of this is the SAP developers at alseda Consulting.
Since SAP has its own financial products (let’s call them “cars”) that are purchased or already in use, they require initial setup and further maintenance to ensure smooth operation. This requires alseda’s developers to work closely with the company’s business experts to analyse the requirements and develop suitable solutions. In this case, the developer acts as the dealer’s expert who understands the customer’s requirements and can either select a suitable car variant or send an order to the factory.
Some companies want to change their “car” and this is where alseda’s “tuning” specialists come in – developing specialised interfaces, functions, forms, reports and other elements that the company needs. Knowledge of object-oriented programming, relational database programming, ABAP and other SAP tools are the most important skills an SAP developer needs.

The automotive world doesn’t stand still, and neither does the SAP world, which is constantly evolving – new technologies, new versions and new features appear, and our job as developers is to ensure that the applications we develop, or support meet today’s needs.
For example, when we have finished “tuning” our car, how does a prospective buyer find out about all the “goodies” we can offer him? Right, we must tell the buyer. But what if there are thousands or tens of thousands of buyers? How do we get the information to each one of them? Or, if there’s a malfunction in the tuned mechanism, how does the mechanic find out what’s wrong and how to fix it? The only way out is to create detailed documentation that can be used by different categories of users. This is one of the tasks of an SAP developer – to create detailed documentation for other team members or customers that explains how to use the developed solutions.
